Victoria Sponge Cake : Nigella Lawson

Went to see some friends this weekend, which naturally means that there is cake.

I made one of my favourites, purely because a) it is so easy to do, and b) because it is so delicious. This actually was the first time I used my friend's oven, which I am hugely jealous of, so was quite anxious, however I think the pictures speak for themselves. Pure yumminess!

Feb : Marble Loaf Cake

Well, the New Year's Resolution hasn't quite turned out, but I am still cooking (and eating!) some good food.

Bake : Chocolate and Vanilla Marble Loaf
Mary Berry 100 Cakes and Bakes

Baking is first and foremost, my passion. This cake mainly came out of boredom.... And the need to have the smell of cake in the house again. It came out beautifully, I must say! It was the first time I have tried to make marble cake, and it was surprisingly easy. When I brought it into work, it disappeared within 30 minutes, which I find is always a good yardstick for success.

One I'll do again!

New Year's Resolution... Week One

One of this year's resolutions was to take advantage of the many, many cookbooks that I own, and to cook one recipe that I haven't done before each week. I was also going to take a photo of them. I failed at taking a photo of the first one, because, to be honest, it got eaten pretty much straight away.

Week One : The Little Paris Kitchen, Rachel Khoo.
Recipe : "Navarin d'agneau printanier" aka Spring Lamb Stew.

Ok, so technically not Spring just yet, but I find it difficult to find a time not to eat lamb, especially on a cold day. Rachel Khoo's recipes are for 4-6 servings, which as a single person (sob) it always makes it quite difficult to divide down, but it still turned out very well. The only part I did stray from the recipe is Rachel advises to season after cooking, whereas I added it at the time of putting it in the oven, so it could go all the way through the stew. I also think it could have done with something more substantial in it (eg potato, perhaps), as it makes for quite a light meal. I served it with some warm ciabatta, which was a good substitute (and a good mop for the stew!).

It was the first time I'd cooked from this book (Christmas present) and I was actually very impressed. The recipe was very well written and easy to follow. As you can see the photos were very pretty too!

So Week One.... Success!
